St. Mary’s Church

There are definitely many things to see in Alicante. Some people are interested in its beaches and nature; some people love its wonderful old town and culture. The Gothic St. Mary’s church of Alicante is one of the main things that attract tourists to this city. It is very special heritage from the old times. Through the passage of time the church has preserved some features from various periods of time.

Iglesia de Santa María is the oldest church in Alicante. The history of church really can be dated a very long time ago. It was built over the remains of the mosque that Moors created during the occupation of Alicante. There is a wide range of art in the interior of this church, but most of it is in a style of Baroque and can be found there from the 15th century.

Though it was mainly built in the 15th of century, it was redesigned many times after that, which is one of the things that make this church so impressive and unique. The entry of the church is a great example of baroque style and times, where you can see astonishing stonework. However the church can surprise with its abundance and the variety of styles that it combines in a spectacular artistic work. The high altar is an evidence of the 18th century. It is designed in the style of rococo. And there is also a Gothic stonework of St. Maria, which is a valuable work from the 15th of century.

Some parts of it, such as the towers may look similar to each other at the first sight, but they are actually unique. The left tower is built in the 14th century and originally it was in the shape of “L”, while the right tower is built at the beginning of 18th century and it is rectangular.

The church can be found in the street of Jorge Juan, next to the square of Santa Maria. It is also very near to the castle of Santa Barbara, which is another impressive monument of Alicante definitely worth visiting. Though Alicante is the most famous with its green areas and beaches, there are many valuable and interesting monuments that remind us about the old times and are surprisingly well preserved. Spain can be found in the southwestern part of Europe and is known for being home to people from different cultures. And these cultures have been brought to Spain and can be witnessed all throughout the year. Different stories can be told when talking about the Spanish celebration and it is even more interesting to take part on them. Events in Spain are always grand and are celebrated wonderfully.

Carnival

All throughout the country, these carnivals can be witnessed and every one of them is unique and has different attractions to make them enjoyable. Get togethers and socializing is at its best during carnivals since everyone's intention is just to have fun. If you want to witness the most amazing and wildest carnivals, then Canary Islands, Cadiz and Stiges are the cities for you. Costumes, both beautiful and unusual flood the streets along with singing and dancing through the night. The streets are packed with people not wanting to miss various activities and events that the carnival has to offer. Pageants, music shows and dances in every form are the usual events in Spanish carnivals and the Spanish people love to participate actively on them. Carnivals are a showcase of art in which many artists are able to exhibit their skills. All this fun takes place just before the 40 days of fasting known as lent. There is no sure origin of the carnivals but the masquerading and parades originated from Italy and soon spread to other European nations.

Christmas in Spain

Surely every country around the world partakes in the celebration of Christmas, but in Spain, things are a little different. Bonfires are lit and candles are placed outside every house on the eve of Christmas. On that day, people also attend the Christmas mass and delight on various recipes cooked just for Christmas. Reunions and exchanging of gifts among family, friends and neighbors happen on the next day. On the 28th of December, the Days of Innocent happen, which is still considered as part of the Christmas season. The story of the Days of Innocent dates way back and tells the story of a huge massacre that ended the life of many innocent people. In the modern times, pranks are played on this day by the Spanish, treating it as a Fool's Day.

The exciting Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the most famous and popular cities in Spain, sometimes even more popular than the capital, Madrid, thanks to the incredible architectural work of Antoni Gaudi. The Park’s In Granada

Granada has a number of wonderful parks in its city limits, dominated by beautiful gardens, fountains and lush flowers. A number of the parks carry a heavy Arab influence with pretty courtyards or patio areas, and others are royal gardens. Wherever you are, you’ll find serenity in the parks of Granada. The parks are the best place to catch your breath after a day sightseeing or shopping, and a lovely location for an afternoon stroll. Some of the parks are very formal, in the style of royal palaces and referred to by the Spanish as Jardin Real. Others are more relaxed, with a loose flow of flowers arranged in a casual fashion and left to grow freely over walls and gates. Smaller gardens that belong to stately homes may sometimes be open to the public, and it’s worth a shot to try and see these beautiful spaces.

Alhambra and the Generalife

Heading to the Alhambra will bring you to its beautiful outdoor spaces. The sound of water falling from its fountains and into its pools is soothing, and the fragrance of the surrounding flowers refreshing. The area is filled not only with flowers and plants, but also trees that provide the perfect shade on a hot summer’s day. In traditional Arab style, there are geometrical courtyards and patios which, surveyed from the numerous balconies are a sheer delight. The gardens of Generalife are similar and equally as refreshing, and are a wonderful place for a romantic walk.

Patio Gardens

Also in Granada are a number of patio gardens, similar to the Riads found in towns and cities, which provide cooling spaces in the interior of a building or residence. Many are Moorish of origin and their small size does not detract from their beauty. Many have small orange trees bearing wonderful scents; others have colourful plants and flowers. For fine examples of this you can head to the Monastery of Santa Isabel la Real or San Jeronimo and take in the atmosphere.

No matter where you are in Granada you should make time to visit a local park or gardens. Some of the smaller spaces may be less busy and are ideal villas lloret de mar places to lounge around with friends or alone with a good book. The Alhambra is a park on a different level with a fantastic view of the palace and gardens which you can explore for hours on end. Be sure to make time when you’re in Granada and head to any of the parks in the area.

Historical overview of the City of Seville

Early history

The city of Seville has a varied and interesting past. A strategic location in Spain, the city has been a connection between the Atlantic Ocean and the routes inland. The area has also been an important trading point since the beginning of the 9th century. Rumour has it that the city was founded by Julius Caesar; however this is more of a myth than fact. In the Roman period the city and surrounds became highly developed, and relics of this era are proudly displayed in the numerous museums in Seville while the layout of the streets harks back to that era. Continually invaded and plundered throughout its early history, from Vandals, Barbarians and Visigoths, the Visigoths eventually embraced Catholicism and the religion spread amongst them.

Moorish rule and the Reconquista

In the 8th century the Moors captured the city and encouraged an influx of Arab citizens who left their mark on the city. A church now stands on one of the main mosques but visitors to Divino Salvador church can still see traces of the mosque in the building, and the layout of the streets in the area surrounding it have maintained the Moorish street layout. Seville emerged as its own kingdom and expanded its territories and influence in the greater region until falling to then Berbers from the Maghreb who had been invited in to help the region against Alfonso V1 of Castile. The Berbers began a campaign of discrimination towards the native population which gave rise to general discontent. The Almohads had a brief reign too, until the Reconquista led by Fernando III in 1248. In 1356 a huge earthquake meant the necessary reconstruction of many of the buildings and churches in the city. Construction of the grand cathedral began and it remains an important tourist site to this day. It houses an excellent museum and is a great example of gothic and renaissance styles.

Modern Seville

The city of Seville has many influences as a result of its varied history. Moorish influences on the architecture of the buildings can be seen, as can a strong Roman influence. Palm trees and mosaiques dominate, in the style of the Moors, and the winding streets of the old town hark back to the city’s Arab influence. The location costa blanca city also boasts many beautiful parks with fountains, orange and date palm trees and sculptures. These parks owe their splendour to the Latin American exposition in 1929 when the city’s open spaces were redesigned and developed to become the splendour that they are today.

Location and Overview

A definite must see in Spain has to be the wonderful Alhambra Palace in Andalucia. Situated on a prominent position overlooking the city of Granada, the beautiful fortress is visited by over 2 million people every year!
Easily accessible from many areas of Spain, the Alhambra is a popular destination for those looking to add a bit of culture to their holidays or those in search of a break from the beaches and bars of the Costa del Sol. The Sierra Nevada mountains are some of the most picturesque in the country and the Alhambra fortress atop watches over the city in splendour.

History

Oozing Moorish history, the Alhambra takes its name from its red façade – Al Hambra meaning the red fortress in Arabic – and is a grand example of arab architecture from the Al Andalus region. With ornate architecture and traditional mosaique tiles, the Alhambre is one of the most famous examples of Islamic architecture in the world. The excellent preservation of the Alhambra’s interior and exterior walls gained it UNESCO world heritage status in the 1980s. Following Moorish retreat after the reconquista, the local Christian population expanded and enlarged the site adding other buildings of note including the Palace of Carlos V.

Atmosphere

Restored in recent years to complete splendour, the Castle is accompanied by beautiful gardens (including the garfens of Generalife as well as various palaces. The fortress offers stunning views over the city from its palm shaded terraces. The gardens are themselves an attraction in the summer months in which there are often music festivals and other events.

The Alhambra definitely needs to be booked in advance, and try and avoid the area in the summer months, as the volume of tourists is almost 7500! Booking in advance will give you peace of mind and ensure you will have the chance to see this fantastic site without being disappointed. Guided tours are also available which may be of use if you are keen on learning as much as possible about the fortress in they short time you have available.

The complex also has a fantastic hotel in the old convent called the maison location espagne Parador, and the Alhambra palace hotel situated just outside the perimeter if you are interested in staying near the site. If you are staying elsewhere in Granada, there are plenty of public transport options and tours available to get you up to the Alhambra for the experience of a lifetime.

If museums and bus tours are not your thing, don’t worry! Barcelona has a wide range of activities for the more adventurous traveller!

Hot Air Balloon

Those who want to see Barcelona from above should get themselves into a hot air balloon! What better way to see the views of this cosmopolitan city and the beautiful surrounding countryside than in balloon! Peaceful and slow moving, the hot air balloon will allow you to appreciate the countryside whilst enjoying the local expertise of your guide. A sunrise or sunset ride is all the more magical as the light changes over the sea.

Moped

When in Spain, do as the Spanish do! Many of us associate the noise and smell of mopeds and scooters with Mediterranean holidays. Watching the locals nip around traffic and ride up steep narrow side streets may give you an appetite for a thrilling tour of Barcelona and the surrounds by moped. Make sure you grab a helmet and remember the locals have been doing this for years and are used to the traffic and road markings. Enjoy yourself, but remember to stay safe!

Hire a Boat

If you’re flying into Barcelona you will notice the abundance of boats out there on the clear seas. Hiring a boat for the day does not have to be a bank-breaking experience, and you can find decently priced boat hire for a ½ day. You can also charter boats with a captain – some companies offer food, drink and music and the opportunity to stop off and jump in the cool waters! Enjoy a glass of wine on the edge of the boat or take a sailing lesson – the seas are yours!

Sweeping over the stunning landscape of the Costa Brava or focussing on the city of Barcelona by air will give you unique and personal glimpses of the scenery and city. Whilst below you tourists are queuing for museums and attraction, you can sit and relax whilst taking it all in from the skyline of one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe to the sparkling Med Sea below you.
